Give something away every day. Even if it's only a smile. The more you give away the less Baba has to take away. Call Baba up on the phone say hello and tell him how you feel. You dial Baba of course long distance long distance call area code. Yeah AMB.
Choose a new Baba sentence each day for meditation. Paste it in your shower or on your fridge. So when you go for a snack you'll get Baba way. I have a sentence now on my bathroom mirror everything happens by the will of God and is necessary. So people use my bathroom they go in and they come out.
God has a sense of humor. So be sure you do if the joke's on you. Enjoy and Baba said this whole universe is a joke. Sometimes a very sad joke, Baba said but it's a joke. He said that joke in '52 in Myrtle Beach. This is number seven. Nobody is keeping count. Don't be bored with his Universe after all he made it.
I had that happen to me once and suddenly Baba showed me every tiny thing was him. I saw Baba in everything. So I couldn't get bored. How can I get bored?
Visualize being in the Tomb and laying your head down there on the Tomb. That's good. When you're upset now, we just if you've been to the tomb, if not you get a photo, you're there you're right there with Baba. Very good.
Tell a joke to Baba. Baba always asked us, you know, tell me a joke. And you had to have one real ready. I was very bad at that but it kind of cheers you up, you know, breaks the ice, the gloom whatever. Sometimes Baba look very sad go into inner work and look like Christ and then he suddenly snap out of and turnaround point to some and say tell me a joke.
And a little boy here he had his own way of remembering Baba. They have a picture that Baba that keeps falling down his mother said ‘oh, it's too bad and she says no more. Every time it falls down - remember Baba. See every failure of yours and others as a step in learning. I think that's important. There's no such thing as Baba says that is fair, that is a success - without failures. And he says that in a good way. So worry about failure it's going to help you to learn something.
See evil as a lesser good. Baba said the Saints are his assets and sinners his liabilities. So make friends with a few liabilities. Be cheerful even if it hurts. Baba says it helps others. It’s a nice cliché. But I like it. You can't have a rainbow without sunshine and rain. It's like the law of Maya, the opposites. You can't draw a picture without black or white, you know, so there's got to be these opposites in nature, in the world. And so be careful about it. You know - dissolve fear by loving and daring.
Kick the worry habit. it costs a lot of money. Baba gave me the worry operation. I've talked to the Los Angeles Times about that operation Baba gave me but he really gave me the worry operation. I can't worry anymore. It's a waste of energy, it’s a terrible waste. You never solve anything by worry. When Baba said we couldn't write him I would write a letter to Baba and mail it and I mailed it in God Speaks. I put the letter in God Speaks. And somehow it would get solved.
It's fun. I've I used to tuck them in other places too. I've recently been going through old things that I have and finding all these letters sealed up that I wrote to Baba. I open them. Then I read this big thing that I was writing Baba about. It's all such a joke now. What was I writing - five per day? So - send Baba a letter. You can still write Baba letter. Remember all the words you ever say. They collect in one place.
So say them well so you won't get deafened by the sound of your own words. Another is being very careful what you say it. All that sound Baba said accumulates. It's really like the law of karma actually. All that you send out from yourself collect ssomewhere and hangs there and then echoes back to you. So be very careful what you say.
Well, each one is for someone. Einstein, serious space. You are in your own space-time. All the words you say are in your own space-time bubble. And that's the law of karma. Karma comes back to you. Remember that sound is a very potent thing. You know, we use words very carelessly sometimes. Muttering I hate that, I don't like this, she's such and such, he’s a twist and a knot. Those words stay out there. They come back to you. Love yourself.
I think a lot of people have problems loving themselves. You know the cliché. Know the psychologist as your low self-image. So why have a low self-image? Love yourself- as your Baba? Feel good about yourself and then you really start feeling better about other people. If you feel lonely call up another lonely person. Talk, get together, invite them over. Go out for a movie or something. I have a lot of people complain how lonely they are. But they're people who never give you a call, never try to go out and see somebody else. They want somebody to come to them and make them feel less lonely. And the only way to stop being lonely is to reach out.
I think loneliness is a very real thing for a lot of people. And this one goes along with it: don't seek love give out some free samples. See what happens. This is sort of taking off after the Prayer of Saint Francis, which is very beautifully said don't seek love, but give it.
I know sometimes people come to our group, you know, a newcomer. And they may say there's no love. What is this Baba group? There's no love - and I always think well, that's a person who always sees what they want to see. There are other people who come and give the love. Are you seeking love or are you giving? Which side are you on? Change the balance and things will work out better. And this is another favorite of mine. See Baba's beauty in everything. See his consciousness in every conscious thing. See his form in every form and you won't be afraid of anything.
I had a dream once - Baba gave me all these dreams in 1952. I saw a huge snake. It had Baba's eyes. I saw a huge elephant. It had Baba's eyes. I saw a huge turtle and it had Baba's eyes. And a tree. It was Baba Then Baba made me tell a dream. Latter on the next day he said when you see me in everything you won't be afraid of anything. So now what I do as I am afraid of riding in cars - I look at every car, that's Baba, and Baba is the driver.
But everybody has some fear, right? It may be your next exam at school or your mother-in-law. Just see Baba, see Baba's eyes, in their eyes. It's like Alain Youell when he first met Baba. He didn't say but Alain was very afraid of snakes. And so the first night he was there he got up in the middle of night to piddle. He went outside and there was a snake looking at him and he was terribly frightened. He said Baba's name and the next day Baba said to him 'how did you sleep?' Oh fine, Baba. No - how did you sleep? Well Baba I saw this thing and it turned out that I told the mandali. The mandali asked for description. It was a krait snake. One of those terrible snakes that are much worse than the cobra. They don't wait to strike. They strike but it didn't strike me - it slid away. So Baba said you see you saw me in the snake. You said my name and it went away. So it cured his fear of snakes..
There's always something that you will be afraid of. So just imagine that it is Baba and suddenly it's not so bad anymore. I remember getting a call from the president of Mattel. I used to work there. I get a call. It’s the secretary saying, "Mrs. Handler wants to see you.” Her nephew and I we started a Baba bookstore together. He quit his job there and started a Baba bookstore. "Oh here it comes. I've been corrupting her nephew."
Wait a minute. I've met Baba. I'm not gonna be afraid of the President of Mattel. So I walk down the hall, go into a big office and she's behind this huge desk. She had a voice like I'm a lawyer.” Were all very happy you are working for us. Here's a stock certificate." It was so funny. You know the worst thing is that I didn't want to be fired.
Baba gives you the kick and the kiss. So don't always want the kisses. Expect that when you get the kiss you will get the kick or when you get the kick you will get the kiss. You know, they kind of go together. If you want Baba's kiss except the kick. That's good yoga. You're supposed to be beyond the opposites. You're not a Christian Scientists. Scientists only want good things, right?
I read at least one line a day in a Baba book. When people met Baba, new people, he'd always say ‘read the Discourses, read God Speaks.’ Yet it's a shocking fact that a lot of people have not yet gone through the Discourses or God Speaks or some of the Baba things. I'll put in a plug for the 'Path of Love' and all the Awakeners. A lot of Baba's work is there.
Find one sentence. Even if you're dead tired, you can pick up a book, read one sentence, and go to sleep on that sentence. It's sort of like a message when you just pick one sentence You know, there's the custom of opening the Bible and putting your finger there. That's good psychology. Like they do in the East, with Hafiz. You've probably seen Aloba do that.
With Hafiz they do the same thing put a finger in and that's your message. I remember that once I was in India and Aloba did that for me, reads it out in Persian. It suited me perfectly at the moment. The next day I busted my foot. So it was Baba’s message. It's interesting how it works.
Hang up a Christmas stocking for Baba and start filling it with good thoughts for everybody. You could pin a stocking on your wall and stuff it with real good thoughts, especially good thoughts about other people. It sounds like a cliché but we do fill our minds up with a lot of negativity about other people. For Baba’s sake if you could just toss it around the other way.
Say something good, within yourself, of that person that you're thinking of. That's like stuffing a Christmas stocking for Baba. Always good thoughts. If you could see that inner world we live in it’s a world of the mind. I mean, we're all separate bodies here on these hard metal chairs, but in reality we are in a flow of mind. It's all one mind . You're just creating ripples with what you think. All mind, ripple minds, come together with everybody else's ripples. So the more positive you send out the law of good boomerangs back to you. You have to understand this universe that you're in. As a human being you are mind and what you think is very important. Especially about other people.
To understand the consequences of negativity will reduce karmic in the things that happen. You know why they happen - they happen because you've been thinking in a negative way. Similar patterns will appear. You know, why were you robbed? Why did someone back bit? Then you wonder - Why did it happen to me? I didn't deserve it. It did happen, somewhere, in the negative thought seeded long ago. A seed thought that nourished and sprouted.
If you think of the lives of saints, and it's documented, they never said anything negative about anybody. That is being a saint. I'm talking to myself now and to all of you. I'm a Gemini. I have to remember. So I'm trying to remember these things, to myself. Learn to play. Don't be so serious. Play. Do you play enough? Do you have fun enough you really know how to let go and just enjoy the world. You know - too many solemn people, sad. I spent my life a part of it designing toys for people and games for grownups. And you know, there's nothing like making it all a game. Baba loved to play, played with everyone, cricket, marbles.
I just reading Dr. Donkin's diary which will be in the next Awakener, by the way. They formed a game club and they were all to suggest, you know, what games they should play and this one and that one gave them names and one I think Don suggested marbles. Baba said that's what we'll play. So they formed a marble club. What was it in Peter's Tommy? You know where there's the pinball wizard or something.... Great imaging - ah so if you learn to play you may win Baba's game.
And this is another one we used to do. Still do. Whenever we have a gathering we have an empty place setting for Baba so that you're inviting him, you have a place for him.
Give Baba a pet nickname. And call him by you know …. Yeah it can be silly nickname. Doodles or Booby Do. Whatever. I don't know. What's the latest? Do you have a special nickname for Baba?
Say the prayers every day at least once. Stand up while you say the prayers to show respect for the greatest God, Father of them all. Baba himself stood up. He wanted everyone to stand up when the prayers were said.
It’s an interesting thing about the prayers. The prayers becomes like a rhythm inside your subconscious. The words are suddenly there when you need them. You all know Baba has three major prayers. The Master's Prayer, the Prayer of Repentance, the Beloved Prayer. Learn them.
And the Prayer of Repentance. Learn it. And the Mandali Prayer. Learn it. We were with Baba one time in 56 and we had this big commotion and Baba made everybody say their peace. They come for fighting. What he said ‘I want you all to stand and say the Prayer of Repentance and then I will embrace you and forgive you everything up to that time.’ Nobody knew the prayer. So he had Kitty run and get a copy of the Prayer of Repentance.
Imitate Baba by never being offended by anyone or anything. Baba said, describing himself, as the God-Man, ‘I am never offended by anybody or anything.’ How many times have you gotten offended? Then there are some people who get offended all the time. They make a habit of it. You walk in the room, we breathe in the offend knowing there's no way to make that person happy. They've got to be offended. It’s best to ignore the offensive voice. So not being offended is a very important thing.
Baba says the greatest catastrophes in the world are unable to accept him and yet the tiniest of things he is concerned about. We've all seen that with Baba. We were with Baba, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, there's Baba jolly and happy. If someone's has sore, someone didn't feel well, he'd be concerned about them. The tiniest of things. Someone asked me yesterday does Baba think of everything I do? Is he aware of everything, every little thing, I do? Of course he is. He is there. He is concerned about every little tiny thing that is happening. You want to put him to the test? Okay, but it's true. He is concerned about the smallest things and not about big things. That’s why we have to be pay attention to what's important.
There's a beautiful discourse ‘ the Infinity of the Truth’ where Baba says that the greatest thing and the smallest thing are equal. It’s stating an example like someone who gives millions to charity. The smallest is equal to the greatest. It's a very important because human beings are impressed by big things, big successes, and big donations. And yet the small, when you are with Baba, you see that his eyes are on the tiniest smallest thing. I was sitting there one time and I guess I was gonna crack my knuckles or something. I don't know. I was fiddling, breaking, and suddenly I saw everybody kind of smiling.
There was Baba. He noticed the smallest little thing about me and I'm sure he knew why I was doing it. I didn't know I was doing it. Imagine you sit there with Baba, he says I'm working all over the universe while I'm here with you. Yet he can take his time to ask you how were your bowel movements this morning? Oh, yes, He really paid attention to everything.
So the tiniest thing can be of interest to him. Thank Baba for your suffering. It helps you grow. As when Jean Adriel left the ashram in 1936 for Europe. Ah to thank Baba for all the wonderful times with him and thank Baba for the suffering. Well that's kind of a harsh thing isn't it. But then you look back, analyze your life, it is the moments of suffering moments that helps you grow. It’s not that you want to go out there and beg for suffering but you know it is the way that Baba is helping you. It's like growing pains.
I always remember before I came to Baba I was very devoted to Ramakrishna. Some disciple asked him to look at those people over there. They're happy. They have everything, everything's fine. Everything goes well in their lives. Then Ramakrishna said ‘they are living a vegetable life.’
They just go from birth to death and at the end what have they done? You grew up. You go to school. You get married, have kids. You have a job, you get sick and you died. And that is a vegetable life. So what is the non vegetable life? When you get Baba’s kick that makes you confront things. Always new lessons to learn. I know some of these are repetitive but as I say I'm talking to myself. Remember backbiting is present in the room. Backbiting is unattractive. Baba said this another way that we should thank backbiters. They are collecting your sins.
That comes back to you. You picked those sanskara off of them. You know something you didn't like about them and you paste it on yourself. Pretty soon you're all loaded up with fresh sanskaras. Dr. Tim Morris said it's like taking every layer off the dirty laundry. Why load yourself up with all these bad things that you don't like?
The negativity builds up preventing one from seeing through to anything good with anybody. Everything and everybody is bad, dumb and down. The whole thing. You know people like them. As they load, loading themselves up, that goes on to the next one.
Remembers Joy - Joy is his middle name. Baba has a middle name. It is Joy, enjoy! A wonderful example for us is St. Francis because he was a Western Saint. Baba said he was the only Western saint in reach that six plane. Then he became God-realized. Wonderful story. And he was joyous all the time. Even in the worst of times. He was cold and hungry. Beaten on by people who didn't approve of him. He would just glow with joy and enjoy every minute of it. Because he felt God's joy. That happiness is what it has influenced people about St. Francis to this very day.
Another one Baba told us to have 1% of his infinite patience. That happened at the moment when we all had gotten ticked off. He said you should all have 1% of my infinite patience with each other. I thought that's one percent of infinity. So where am I? Now I want to hear some of your favorite ways of hanging onto Baba. Anybody got a good one? I can't hear you. Oh, that's great. Yeah, right. In 1954, I think that was when he said it. He said it another way to all men at the men's darshan. ‘Think of me.’ He gave actual times like when you first get up in the morning, at 12 noon and at five o'clock. I remember Fred Winterfeld no matter where he was and if you were with him Fred would say ‘oh twelve o'clock. Jai Meher Baba’. Even though you don't may pick those times - pick a time. It is very good. We all wear watches mostly. You can say now it's time to think Baba. Think of Baba for just one moment a day. That is enough. People say, ‘oh I don't have time.’ One moment a day. Baba said if you take my name at the moment of your death then you could come to me. You could actually get out of the rat cage, you know. Out of evolution, involution, reincarnation. Baba says ‘how will you do it if you don't remember me now?
In Japan you're not supposed to say, 'Hi.' The concept means, 'Yes.' Girls especially can get in trouble. But anyway, it's like seeing Baba, the essence of him. Not ignoring the relative personality, but seeing the essence of Baba. I actually had an experience like that. It was long ago when I first came to Baba. We were in this retreat in Connecticut. With Norina and Elizabeth and everybody. I don't know what this lady had done to annoy or disturb everyone. I never did find out. But she was sort of ordered to leave the retreat. She came to say good-bye to me. She said ‘would you meditate with me for a moment.’ I said sure.
She sat there, her face completely disappeared and I saw Baba’s face. I didn't know her story then; I found out later. I thought of what you think of one that is despised or disliked or lost. Baba was in the person. I saw Baba. And you feel right away that the real self, in someone, is Baba. I think that's what I always felt what the Bible meant that the one unforgivable sin is against the Holy Ghost. I used to go around what is the Holy Ghost? I don't want to sin against the Ghost. What am I - what is this Ghost? It’s a different word now but when the Bible was translated into English Holy Ghost meant Spirit. You don't offend the Spirit in someone. And that's really Baba, the Babaism. If fact Eruch said Baba gave, one day, two spiritual secrets. Two spiritual secrets.
One was never to offend the heart of anyone. Which is the same thing like the sin against the Holy Ghost - the Baba in you. And the other one was to be grateful every day. To give thanks every day. You know I try that. The other day was a lousy day, I said thank you Baba. Thank you. Great Sahavas, thank you Baba. Accident on the way home. Thank you, Baba. All Baba, all gratitude. You know, it's a good secret. Baba secret.
I had just met Baba. It was 1952. Everyday Baba gave us the privilege to be with him. He'd take walks on the beach early in the morning with the women. I was invited to go along. It was very exciting to go along with the women. I had just met Mehera and got talking to her. It was fascinating. She and I were talking about our love for gardening. We're talking about flowers. All of a sudden there was Baba. His eyes were flashing. He looked really angry. He was looking at me, pointing at me, gesturing. They were translating Baba's gesturing from Gujarati to English saying, ‘You didn't show us the way back to the center.’
Was I supposed to show the way back to the Center? I had been talking to Mehera and the women don't do anything until Mehera does it. She was talking to me. She was oblivious. We had passed the road back to the Center and Baba was angry because that meant we were all late for his appointments. I know, what have I done? I got so upset. And you know, what is this allegory? I didn't know the path. I didn't you know everything. The first time Baba is not pleased with you it is really something. Baba's been so sweet to me for all those days. So I got real upset. My mind just spun around, you know, fifty cycles a second. Then we're going home down the path. Baba gestured, Mani interpreted, ‘Filis, stop worrying.’ I couldn't stop. I kept thinking ‘what have I done?’
Then Baba called me up to him, took in his right hand, took his left wrist and I felt this energy surge go up. That blanked out a lot of that everything and I didn't think anything of the whole incident. Quite a few hours later I was describing it to Adele -my worry operation. I have the kind of mind that just grinds and grinds. Getting to a snit you call it. you just can't get out of it. Worry something to death. And after surge I could never worry like a snit again. That horrible kind of worry mind was cured. I look back to see that Baba created this total artificial thing. I really hadn't done anything. I mean, nobody told me to show them the path..
Baba just created an artificial scene where he could look at me. Baba created the artificial wrong, got me to worry and then cured the worry. That was Baba testing me. He would create those situations. Don’t worry, be happy. I think he's still doing that but you can always ask for the worry operation. Baba has given many beautiful discourses on worry. In the ‘Path of Love’ I have put them all together and it's a beautiful thing to have Baba help you in that way.
When you go to Meherabad you get shown that very special room where the women were. They show you all these things that they did to keep themselves occupied when Baba was traveling on his long tours to the West, and on his Mast tours. The women mandali made pictures, cut out pictures, and made little embroidered wreaths of paper. They made a little swing with Baba in it. Curious to see that in a little glass box. They did all these things to keep their mind on Baba. They embroidered Baba’ s name. They wrote his name hundreds and hundreds of times. They have notebooks filled with Baba’s name - Meher Baba Meher Baba Meher Baba. They did all these little things to keep their mind on Baba. Sounds like kindergarten but what does it matter if you're concentrating on Baba. That's how they kept themselves thinking of Baba a while He was gone on tours for months at a time.
I don't think any of us gets to that stage where we’re not totally free because if you are totally free then you're God-realized. Baba explained how the Sad Guru who is God-realized keeps the body, becomes an actor. The Sad Guru’s suffering is not real. He's acting out the suffering. The Avatar feels the suffering. To get to that stage all these things are ideas because we have sanskaras. Till the bitter end we have these things to deal with – ideas and the ego.
I think you can relate to other people in their suffering partly because you've overcome a little bit of suffering in yourself. Baba said he'd given a discourse one morning and this guy had come in late. He had explained maya, illusion, suffering. This guy missed the discourse and Baba said ‘I'll give you the gist of it’ and said, ‘you live in water all the time, but you don't know it. That's like you're living in God and you don't know it. In other words you in God all the time, but your just a dummy and you don't know it. That's where we are. We are living in God, do not know it.
In art cards lately there have been a lot of Baba symbols. White horses and rainbows. Baba said the rainbow is the symbol that God would never destroy the world. Noah asked God for a sign. He sent the rainbow - that was God's promise that he'll never destroy the world again by a flood. Never mind earthquake, fire and - time!
Thank you all.
